Walking into your first no-gi Jiu-Jitsu class can feel a bit intimidating, but you'll quickly realize it's a supportive and welcoming environment. Here's a breakdown of what to expect:

  1. Warm-Up:
The class typically starts with a warm-up that includes basic movements like jogging, shrimping (hip escapes), forward and backward rolls, and other drills to get your body ready. These movements are essential to Jiu-Jitsu, and over time, they will become second nature.
  2. Techniques & Drills:
After the warm-up, the instructor will demonstrate a series of techniques, often focusing on positions, submissions, or escapes. You’ll drill these moves with a partner. Don’t worry if it feels complicated at first—everyone was a beginner once!
  3. Live Sparring (Rolling):
Many classes end with live sparring sessions, commonly referred to as "rolling." Here, you’ll get a chance to practice the techniques you’ve learned in a more dynamic, fluid setting. Don’t worry about "winning" or submitting your partner, especially in your first class. Focus on staying relaxed, breathing, and trying to apply what you’ve learned.
  4. Etiquette:
Respect and cleanliness are huge in Jiu-Jitsu. Make sure to be polite and follow the gym’s rules. Bowing onto the mat, shaking hands before and after rolls, and showing respect to your training partners and instructors are all part of the culture.

No-gi Jiu-Jitsu doesn’t require the traditional gi, so you can dress in athletic wear. Here’s a quick list of what’s recommended:

  1. Rash Guard:
A tight-fitting, long- or short-sleeve rash guard is ideal. This prevents friction burns from the mat and provides compression for your muscles.
  2. Spats (Leggings) or Athletic Shorts:
Either spats or board shorts (MMA-style) are perfect. Make sure they don’t have pockets, zippers, or anything that could get caught or cause injury.
  3. Mouthguard (Highly recommended):
While optional, a mouthguard is highly recommended, especially during live sparring. It helps protect your teeth in case of accidental contact. It is mandatory for kids class in order to spar.
  4. Groin Protector (Optional):
Some practitioners wear a groin protector for extra safety during sparring.

  1. Water Bottle:
You’ll sweat a lot, so stay hydrated.
  2. Towel:
You’ll definitely want to wipe off after class.
  3. Flip-Flops:
It’s customary to wear flip-flops or sandals when off the mats. This helps keep the mats clean and avoids spreading bacteria.
  4. Notebook (Optional):
Some practitioners like to take notes after class, especially if you’re serious about retaining techniques.

Most importantly, just come in with a positive attitude and be ready to learn! The journey is challenging but incredibly rewarding.
